The “Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée” Luberon was created in 1988. But the history of Luberon viticulture can be traced back to antiquity. The vines growing here have benefited from two thousand years’ of vine-growing know-how.
Set slightly apart from the Rhône Valley, the Luberon region enjoys a mild Mediterranean climate. Over the years, the region has preserved its cultural and natural heritage. Vines have thrived here since antiquity and dominate the unspoilt natural environment.
The appellation sits in fabulous, natural surroundings. The entire AOC area nestles within the heart of the Parc Naturel Régional du Luberon (Luberon Regional Nature Park). Here, the winemakers feel duty-bound to respect the land and their natural resources. The appellation produces wine in all three colours: red, rosé and white.
The Bandol designation is the flagship red wine designation in Provence and of the Mourvèdre grape variety in France.
The vineyard, carved into ths hillsides around the town of Bandol and its surroundings, faces the sea. The vines are arranged in terraces, giving the impression of a vineyard amphitheatre where the vines are in tune with the climate.
The mistral wind and the Mediterranean climate join limestone and marl soils to enable the Mourvèdre, late-ripening and difficult grape variety, to reach its potential. If the geology and the climate in Bandol give the Mourvèdre its letters of nobility and great and fine red wines in the South, the Controlled designation of origin (AOC) Bandol also produces red wines with other grape varieties as well as it produces white and rosé Provence wines.
