The Domaine owes its name to DOM MAYEUL, the Fourth Abbot of the Abbey of Cluny in Burgundy. He was the proprietor of immense estates according to the official archives of the Church in Apt, Vaucluse. More than fifty documents testify to the importance the cultivation methods, planting, and qualities of the vines. The Domaine is located on the site of a Roman Villa, discovered during a restructuring of the vineyard, which reinforces the privileged environment for the cultivating the vines.
Bernard Viguier is an indirect descendant of DOM MAYEUL. Bernard and Karine Gianti-Viguier work with traditional and natural methods to pre- serve the heritage of the vines, so as to increase ceaselessly the quality and keep the spirit of local wine production.
Truffles, olives ,fruit, lavender, thyme....the aromas are the soul of the Luberon. It is only logical that the harmony of nature with the vines produce a terroir that is discovered in the wines that are produced. The work of the land is privileged, to preserve the freshness of the lean soils forcing the vines to root deeply.
The interspersed apricot, cherry and olive trees in silico-marl soil, the warm, exceptional sunny, Mediterranean climate makes it ideal for our rosés and reds.
The hilly relief of the Haut Luberon with it’s marl-limestone soil and mul- titudes of microclimates promotes cultivation and reserved only for our four white grape varieties.
The winery, built several hundred years ago, continues to evolve, with all the essential modern tools to produce quality wines.
The Domaine de Mayol cultivates its passion to give you unique emo- tions. Some embody Tradition, some embody Modernity. But they all are the fruit of yesterday’s innovation.
